* Note for DOSBox users *

This software is fully installed and configured to run in the DOSBox emulator.
You can simply drag and drop the file POPCRN.BAT over the DOSBox icon to start
playing. Experienced DOSBox users may choose other methods of startup.

The software was configured and tested to work with the official DOSBox build
v0.74-3 available from www.dosbox.com. It may or may not work with any other
third-party DOSBox distributions that are available.

For playing instructions and other information, please refer to the
POP_ENG.DOC file found in the ARKCLONE directory.

* Game controls *

PopCorn is played with the keyboard or mouse, the latter being the preferred
method. Keyboard is however the default setting. The default keys are:

Paddle left             : J
Paddle right            : K
Acion                   : Space bar

You can assign different keys by pressing F5 in the main menu, but the game
will not store your selections -- if you exit the game and start again, the
keys will revert to the default settings.

To switch to mouse control, press F3 in the main menu. Press F4 to switch back
to the keyboard.

* Note on game speed *

PopCorn was written in 1988 for a 8086 computer. By default, DOSBox emulates a
much faster computer, and PopCorn will run too fast to be playable. The game
allows to adjust playing speed but it is better to emulate the original speed
it was programmed for. An approximation of a 8086 would be around 300 emulated
CPU cycles (compared to 3000 which is DOSBox's default).

For more information, please refer to the DOSBoxWiki:
https://www.dosbox.com/wiki/Performance#Emulated_CPU_equivalency

This distribution of PopCorn will automatically switch to 315 cycles and back
to the default values once you exit the game, but only if you run it via the
supplied POPCRN.BAT file.

You can also change the amount of emulated CPU cycles manually:

Open your DOSBox configuration file (by default it is dosbox-0.74-3.conf) in a
text editor of your choice and find the following line (assuming no previous
changes were made to the configuration file):

cycles=auto

Change this to:

cycles=fixed 315

Save and close dosbox-0.74-3.conf.

* Note on correct colours in DOSBox *

PopCorn was programmed for CGA graphics adapters and uses a four-colour mode.
By default, DOSBox emulates a VGA graphics card which is backwards-compatible
with EGA and CGA modes, but lacks certain features.

On a VGA card, PopCorn will run with the following colours: magenta, cyan,
black and white. However, on an original CGA card the magenta colour would be
replaced by red, making the game look much nicer.

DOSBox is able to fully emulate a CGA video card, but this can only be enabled
in the configuration before starting the emulator.

Open your DOSBox configuration file (by default it is dosbox-0.74-3.conf) in a
text editor of your choice and find the following line (assuming no previous
changes were made to the configuration file):

machine=svga_s3

Change this to:

machine=cga

Save and close dosbox-0.74-3.conf.
