Keys and simulation menu ======================== KEYS ---- The simulation is controlled from the keyboard and optionally mouse or PC game card add-ons (joysticks etc.). The keys in round brackets are for the european keyboard. A. Engine ========= e : engine on/off = ( ' ) : increase throttle - ( á ) : decrease throttle 1...0 : min/max throttle C. Flight Controls ================== z ( y ) : center stick , : rudder left . : rudder right E. Views ======== F1 : front Shift-F1 : back F2 : left F3 : right F4 : toggle upper front view F7 : turn view right F8 : turn view left F9 : turn view down F10 : turn view up v : chase view p : chase nearest enemy view Alt-v : cockpit view PAGE-UP : zoom in PAGE-DOWN : zoom out F. Miscellaneous ================ Alt-t : show info : menu/Pause Alt-z ( Alt-y ) : time compression Alt-x : exit simulator Alt-g : grab a picture (you will find a .pcx file inside the simulator directory) CONTROLS Joystick Any selection from the joystick sub-menu will select the PC games card channels 1 or 2 as the primary controller. Standard Joystick Selects a standard analog joystick Analog rudder Selects rudder input on channel 4 of the PC games card Analog Throttle Selects analog throttle on channel 3 of the PC games card. You cannot use analog throttle with Thrustmaster sick section (select standard joystick) Thrustmaster Stick Selects Thrustmaster stick as primary control with Thrustmaster stick hat on analog channel 3 controlling view direction Thrustmaster Throttle Selects Thrustmaster Throttle (Mark 1) as throttle and extra control imputs Calibrate Calibrates input devices on channels 1-4. Ensure that controllers are in neutral positions and press any key to start calibration, move all controllers (do not forget Thrustmaster hat) to their limits and press any key to end calibration Mouse Selects the mouse as the primary flight controller Keyboard Selects the keyboard as the primary flight controller DISPLAY Horizon shading Turns horizon shading on/off SIMULATION Ground Crash When checked hitting the ground results in damage (normally terminal) to the aircraft. When not checked your aircraft will bounce G-lock Turns visual effects of G-lock on/off SOUNDS Engine Noise Turns engine noise on/off All Noise Turns all noise on/off Save as Default Saves your preferred setup (including joystick calibration) to hard disk. The defaults are loaded automatically when the simulation is re-run. Technical support tips ====================== ? Problem: The game runs too slow! * Reason: To run in the 640x480 Super VGA mode, your machine should have an S3, ATI, or VESA-compatible accelerated graphics card. Unless you have a fast local bus machine, a non-accelerated graphics card will run the game too slowly in SVGA. ! Solution: Not many. Buy a faster machine. ? Problem: I'm getting the message "Unable to set video mode" when I try to play the missions. * Reason: The Display options aren't set for your graphics card, or you do not have VESA-compatible 640x480 display resolution software installed in your computer's memory. ! Solution: Set the Display options in the game to match your card, and/or install the proper VESA-compatible software into your computer's memory BEFORE your run the game. ? Problem: I can't get any sound! * Reason: There is only one sound when the simulation start. If it does not work is because the simulation absolutely REQUIRES a 100% Sound- Blaster compatible card to be able to play digitized sound effects while flying the simulation. (Some cards advertise 100% compatibility, but aren't! If you get the idea that sound card compatibility is becoming a virtual tar-pit in the PC game industry, you're right.) ! Solution: the simulation assumes that your sound card is configured for IRQ 5, DMA 1, and Port 220H (default settings). Any other settings need to be noted by the SETBLASTER command in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file. Please check the owner's manual of your particular card for instructions on how to configure it to the specifications mentioned above. As a last resort, you can enable your PC's speaker to play very basic sounds during the game. Owners of ProAudio Spectrum sound cards occasionally have problems with Sound Blaster compatibility. Depending on the model and manufacture date of your card, setting the IRQ, DMA, and PORT addresses can be performed either with jumpers, or through the card's installation software. If your ProAudio refuses to play the digitized sounds in the game, please checkyour card's configuration and ensure that the proper settings, including the AUTOEXEC.BAT SETBLASTER option, is correct for Sound Blaster emulation. This advice is also applicable for owners of the Reveal and Sound Galaxy line of sound cards. ? Problem: The game locks up, drops me back out to DOS, or gives me an "Insufficient Memory" message. * Reason: This is almost always the result of a the computer system's memory configuration specified in the AUTOEXEC.BAT and CONFIG.SYS programs. The simulatio requires only 330k of Conventional Memory, and 2 megabytes of Extended Memory. Very few machines are unable to provide this. If your system refuses to run the game, you should try to reconfigure your system to reduce or eliminate excessively large RAMDISK or SMARTDRV settings. Typing "MEM/C" from the DOS directory provides a detailed breakdown on your computer's memory status. If this shows at least 330k of conventional memory and 2 megabytes free, "FST: WWII" should have no problems at all. DOS 6.0 and above contains an excellent memory configuration program called MEMMAKER. Running MEMMAKER from the DOS directory is simple, fast, and can cure many memory headaches. Final Words =========== WINGS OVER ITALY was created with the FLIGHT SIM TOOLKIT (FST), a fabulous program by Domark and NEOBOOK PROFESSIONAL by Neosoft. During constructing, I discovered that designing was much more fun than flying in it. However, constructing was very time-intensive. I can honestly recommend buying FST, if you are willing to spend some time with it. I am very interested in your opinion about the scenarios I created. Please send me your impressions/suggestions/criticism via e-mail. Remember, if I don't get any feed-back I can't improve anything. If you are interested to other games realized with Flight Simulator Toolkit you could visit my FST web pages at the url: http://www.tizeta.it/home/duo/ Enjoy, 01/12/1996 Luca Oleastri duo@pt.tizeta.it
