README file for ROXX - by PLBM Games ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ File Updated: January 17, 2004 Registration information located at the bottom of this file. You can register at: http://www.plbm.com Cheat Mode is Alt-F3 (registered version only). System Requirements: ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ This program requires an IBM PC or compatible with at least VGA. In general, faster systems will run the program more efficiently. Sound Blaster Notes: ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ This program contains routines to play digital sound on a Sound Blaster or compatible card. However, this program does NOT contain autodetection routines. This program relies upon the BLASTER= variable being set appropriately in your environment. If the BLASTER= variable is set incorrectly, the program may crash. If the BLASTER= variable is absent the program will NOT attempt to use Sound Blaster sound. Additionally you will need to have free EMS memory to hear all digital sounds (they're too big to fit in conventional memory). The sounds deemed "most important" to game play will be loaded into conventional memory on a first-come, first- served basis. To hear ALL sounds you will need enough EMS free to fit the file ROXSFX.DBO. Check free EMS with the MEM command under DOS. Key Function: Possible Keys To Use ~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Rotate Ship To Left: [K] [Z] [,<] [Left Arrow] Rotate Ship To Right: [L] [X] [.>] [Right Arrow] Fire Laser Cannon: [Ctrl] [:;] [S] [Up Arrow] Fire Thruster Rocket: [Alt] ['"] [A] [Down Arrow] Emergency Hyperspace: [Space] [Enter] NOTE: ALL of the above keys are active all of the time, allowing a wide range playing combinations. Experiment to find what works best for you. Hint: I recommend using the [Z] and [X] keys for rotation, the [Alt] key for thrusters, and the [Ctrl] key for firing, leaving [Space] handy for hyperspace when needed in an emergency. JOYSTICK PLAY: ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ You can use a standard IBM PC Joystick to play ROXX, by selecting JOYSTICK play from the input selection screen that appears before each game. You may also select Calibrate Joystick by pressing CTRL-J at any time during the game or main menu. MOUSE PLAY: ~~~~~~~~~~~ You can use the standard IBM PC mouse to play ROXX, by selecting MOUSE play from the input selection screen that appears before each game. Mouse controls are left/right mouse to rotate, Left-Click to fire, Right-Click to thrust. These controls are only recommended for advanced ROXX players. SIMULTANEOUS KEYBOARD OPERATION: ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The keyboard keys are always active for spaceship control, even if you are playing with Mouse or Joystick. Often it is helpful to use a combination of Keyboard controls and Joystick/Mouse controls. To use Hyperspace, you will still need the keyboard (SPACE) if you are using the Mouse or Joystick!! Additional Keys: ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ [P] - Pause game [CTRL-J] - Calibrate Joystick [F1] - Review this file (HELP) [F2] - Display high score chart [F5] - Toggle sound on/off [F7] - Toggle Score Display On/Off (turn OFF for slow machines) [F10] - Quit game, go to menu [ESC] - Quit game, go to DOS Game Notes: ~~~~~~~~~~~ Your mission is to maneuver through the hostile Roxx belts and destroy as many Roxx as you can. Hindering your efforts will be enemy craft which navigate the Roxx belts and take shots at your ships, as well as at nearby Roxx, in an attempt to destroy your space ship. They are worth a lot of points if you shoot them. Note that due to a bizarre space warpage, travelling off the edge of the universe will cause objects to reappear on the opposite side of the universe. This may be used to great advantage in ambushing enemy space ships, which are immune to this bizarre warpage. Hint: By shooting many SMALL enemy ships in a row, you may be able to earn a MORE POWERFUL WEAPON! Try it out... Scoring Table: ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Item: Points ~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~ Large Roxx: 20 Medium Roxx: 50 Small Roxx: 100 Large Enemy: 200 Small Enemy: 1000 Bonus ship are initially awarded for every 10,000 points scored. Later in the game the spacing of ships gets a little wider: 10,000 - 20,000 - 30,000 - 40,000 - 50,000 70,000 - 90,000 - 110,000 - 140,000 - 170,000 210,000 - 260,000 - 320,000 - 390,000 - 470,000 570,000 - 690,000 - 830,000 - 1,000,000 - 1,210,000 1,460,000 - 1,760,000 ... etc. How far can you go???
